Directors and Support Staff
Mike has been coaching volleyball for 14 years, mentoring players of all ages and skill levels from youth to collegiate (DI, DII, DIII, and NAIA). He focuses on player development and cultivating the whole person through the sport of volleyball, and many of his players have gone on to play and accomplish great things at the collegiate level.
In 2014, Mike founded the North Carolina Youth Volleyball League (NCYVL) with the purpose of developing a complete youth volleyball program to facilitate the introduction, growth, and continued development of the sport of volleyball throughout North Carolina. Within the first year, NCYVL served nearly 300 players through fun, local, and low-cost volleyball programs open to everyone grades 1-12.
Channel Nelson is NCYVL’s Regional Lead Coach, for our Durham and Raleigh locations. As a standout player with UNC Chapel Hill, she was named a First Team All-ACC member, AVCA Second Team All-American (second Tar Heel in history to earn full AVCA All-America honors), and selected to the AVCA East Coast Division I All-Region team. She graduated with a communication major and a history minor.
Chaniel offers private and small-group lessons for all skills.
Chuck Shoemaker is an assistant volleyball coach at North Carolina Wesleyan College and previously served two years at University of Pennsylvania. At IUP, he worked with blockers, coaching one player to First Team All-PSAC honors in his first season. Before joining IUP, Chuck completed a graduate assistantship at the University of Cumberlands. He led the Patriots to a 36-22 record over 2 seasons.
He graduated from Clarion University in 2011 with a degree in secondary education and a minor in coaching.
Paige Neuenfeldt recently graduated from UNC, where she majored in business, and played volleyball throughout her collegiate career. One of the most talented student-athletes in program history, she broke several records and earned 25+ awards during her time at UNC. She is the only Tar Heel to ever appear on the AVCA All-America list all four years. Neuenfeldt earned the UNC Chancellor’s Award, was named an Athletic Director’s Scholar-Athlete, Top-10 Scholar-Athlete, and received the Jim Tatum Memorial Award.
Taylor Treacy is a redshirt senior at UNC, where she is majoring in exercise and sport science, and has played volleyball throughout her collegiate career. Both an outside and opposite hitter, Treacy has earned numerous awards during her time at UNC including AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, AVCA All-East Coast Region, All-ACC First Team, NCCSIA All-State Second Team, NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team, and the Carolina Classic All-Tournament Team twice.
Leigh Andrew is a senior at UNC, where she is majoring in management and society, and has played volleyball throughout her collegiate career. A strong defensive outside hitter, she was a six rotation player for the majority of her time at UNC. During her time with UNC, she earned multiple collegiate All-Tournament Team and MVP awards.
Taylor Leath is a redshirt sophomore at UNC, where she is majoring in business management. Leath is an outside hitter with an impressive start at UNC being named UNC’s Rookie of the Year as well as earning the Jean E. Kindy Award for perseverance and inspiration.
Durham Location Coaches
Nikki played volleyball throughout middle and high school and has also served as a Head Coach for the Lighthouse Eagles in East Wake County.
She received her B.A. in Sport Management and M.Ed. in School Counseling from Liberty University. She currently serves as a Learning Specialist for the Learning Partners Program at Louisburg College.
Anna-Marie Hughes began playing volleyball at the age of 12 for her local rec league and played during middle and high school as a libero. She also played for Jammers Volleyball Club as a libero. Anna-Marie graduated from Jordan High School in 2008 and started her coaching career as an assistant coach for HS and MS at Kestrel High. This is her second season as the head varsity coach for Woods Charter.
Amanda White played club and high school volleyball. She coached a developmental league during her senior year in high school and played beach volleyball during the summers of her college years. Now, Amanda is a high school teacher with a knack for making and executing practice plans that cater to all junior ages.
Liz Markowitz started playing volleyball in 5th grade and graduated from Franklin Academy in 2010. She played two years of club volleyball before attending Wake Tech where she both played volleyball and earned her associates degree in basic education. She has previously coached at Club Red and Jammers Volleyball Club, as well as served as the head coach for Triangle Day School in 2012 and 2013.
Kincey Smith is a junior at North Raleigh Christian Academy (NRCA). She’s played volleyball since the 6th grade and is currently the libero on Triangle 17 Black. At the age of 13, Kincey started playing club at United Volleyball Club, and currently plays on a top national level team at Triangle Volleyball Club.
She’s been the recipient of numerous accolades, including being named defensive player of the year for two seasons at NRCA and all-conference, all-state, all-conference player of the year, and to the All Metro Team by The News & Observer. Kincey is committed to play volleyball at Duke University for the class of 2017.
Raleigh Location Coaches
Paul Zhang is a 2004 North Carolina State University graduate and holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. His volleyball career began in middle school in 1986, and since 2004, he’s played indoor, grass, and sand volleyball with various leagues and organizations in the Triangle area, such as USAV, VolleyAmerica, Town of Cary, and City of Raleigh. Paul has also coached adult teams. He looks forward to combining his on-court playing and coaching experience with the NCYVL.
Katie has been playing volleyball since age 13, and in high school, she was a 3 year varsity captain and all-conference setter. Katie also played club, where she was the setter of a national travel team. Since high school, Katie has been playing recreational volleyball and enjoys coaching as much as she loves playing. She began coaching volleyball when she was 15 and looks forward to coaching for years to come.
Wes is a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a major in Psychology. His volleyball career includes playing with Coastal Virginia Volleyball (2011) and Dominion Volleyball Club (2012).
Kelly played volleyball for Northwest Guilford High School as a middle. She is currently a student at NC State, where she’s studying Mathematics. She looks forward to her new role as a coach at our Raleigh location.
Zebulon Location Coaches
Kenly Simmons is a Greenville, North Carolina, native, and she has been playing volleyball since the 4th grade. In her senior year at J.H. Rose, Kenly’s team won the school’s very first volleyball State Championship. After graduating high school, Kenly attended UNCW and played club volleyball for two seasons. After graduating in 2013, Kenly moved to Zebulon, North Carolina, and made the transition from player to coach. She has been the middle school health and PE teacher and varsity volleyball coach at East Wake Academy since that time.
Kenly enjoys cultivating a passion for the game of volleyball that can be passed along from generation to generation.
